We rebuilt our existing fire pit by replacing the center with a carbon steel tank head. Then lined the outside with rock. Would eventually like to add a wooden bench on one side. Work in progress.
I wanted to make a suggestion. Take out the tank head, and put some cement as the base for the fire pit. Clean out the rust from the tank head and season it with flax seed oil, that way you can use it as a giant cowboy wok and cook for all your friends when they come over :) If you look for cowboy wok on Google you will see what I mean.
